Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens Wedding •Jen + Chris• Boothbay, Maine Wedding Photographer

Jen and Chris make their home in Ohio, where they live with their giant tortoises (we’re talking around 70 lbs folks!) Sherman, Matilda and Valentine. They chose to marry in Maine (where Jen’s family has vacationed every summer for many years) after visiting the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens in Boothbay.  Jen recalls, “We fell in love with the Botanical Gardens on a visit last year when the weather was dreary and heavy fog was everywhere. There wasn’t a single person in the gardens that day and we loved every minute of it.  We just decided to get lost hiking in the rain and see where we turned up. It was a perfect rainy day in one of the most beautiful places on earth!  Our wedding is just an excuse to bring our friends and loved ones to our favorite place! (And to have an open bar while doing so!).”
As you may be able to already tell, these two have a strong sense of adventure and humor to boot! We shared countless laughs together. Jen kindly took the time to share some wonderful tales of their love story….enjoy! (Thanks Jen!!!)

JenandChris-0010JenandChris-0016The Meeting:  “Chris and I met at the Cincinnati Museum Center in Cincinnati, Ohio and started dating November 23, 2010.  (Jen’s grandparents actually met at a USO event in the exact same building back when it was a train station during WWII!)  Chris worked with the live animal collections and I teach school children who come to the museum on field trips. We just started chatting in the offices and soon started to hang out outside of work. I shared all of my favorite hobbies and interests with Chris – kayaking, travel, gardening, history, spending time outdoors and my basset hound Byron.  And he shared all of his favorite hobbies and interests with me – caving, reptiles, travel, hiking, camping, science and MMA. We agreed to disagree on the reptiles and MMA, however, now he is my awesome kayaking buddy and I am his tolerable caving companion.” (Note the tortoises’ gear below….a kayaking paddle and some caving gear 🙂

JenandChris-0041JenandChris-0046JenandChris-0035The Proposal:  “Chris came up with the idea that we should go to see the Moonbow in Cumberland Falls, Kentucky for our anniversary.  I booked a cabin and we were going to spend a long weekend hiking during the day and trying to see a rainbow at night over the Falls. (Side note – this is the only place outside of Africa where a rainbow can be seen at night.) When we showed up, we realized there was a religious revival going on for the youth of a local church, and we were booked right in the center of it all. We escaped by hiking during the day, and at night, we went to the Moonbow as planned. It was cold and we had headlamps to find our way around the falls since nighttime and giant waterfalls do not go well together. After Chris ran us back and forth from the top of the falls to the bottom and back again, I asked if we could go inside and warm up since the Moonbow was not showing up. He said ‘no’ and kept running us to different ledges and overlooks for another two hours. Finally when we stopped on one of the overlooks, I took a moment to fix my headlamp when I thought that Chris was kneeling down to tie his boot. I asked if he could fix my lamp when he pulled out the ring and proposed. I was so surprised that I didn’t even remember to answer! (Which he teased me about to no end afterwards.) Turns out he had been carrying around his great grandmother’s ring since early that morning.  We had been hiking up and down hills, climbing on boulders and crossing streams for 7-8 miles and it was in his pocket the whole time!”

JenandChris-0085Maine Wedding PhotographerMaine Wedding Photographer-0343Maine Wedding Photographer-0149We took full advantage of all the varied gardens throughout the property at the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens. Frank, our lovely golf cart chauffeur, zoomed us around to different locations (even over the crazy terrain!) throughout portrait time (Thank you Frank!!!) Here’s a peek at some of our favorite spots.Maine Wedding Photographer-0171Maine Wedding Photographer-0268Maine Wedding Photographer-0262Maine Wedding Photographer-0304Maine Wedding Photographer-0312Jen and Chris infused their day with lots of personality and playfulness. Their close friend and officiant, Grant, kicked things off Princess Bride Style, “Mawage. Mawage is wot bwings us togeder tooday. Mawage, that bwessed awangment, that dweam wifin a dweam… ” Yes, it made for lots of smiles and belly laughter!

Maine Wedding Photographer-0379Maine Wedding Photographer-0408Maine Wedding Photographer-0422Maine Wedding Photographer-0452Jen and Chris also opted for unity ceremony featuring their favorite happy hour cocktail…the rum and coke. They each added one of the vital ingredients, and the bevvie was given a quick blessing (a squeeze of lime) by their officiant.

Maine Wedding Photographer-0466Maine Wedding Photographer-0496Maine Wedding Photographer-0512Maine Wedding Photographer-0514Jen’s father took a quick moment (and a few quick sips) during the recessional to make sure that the rum and coke didn’t get watered down 🙂

Their cake (which was cut by an impressive sword) featured ‪Ordovician‬ fossils, to honor an archeological dig that Jen works at every year.

Bowdoinham Waterfront Wedding • Heather + Jason • Bowdoinham ME Wedding Photographer

Heather and Jason were married on (what turned out to be) a perfect spring day in Maine! On the morning of May 17, rain was falling from the sky in sideways sheets. To say it was pouring was an understatement. But, just as they say rain is lucky on your wedding day, we got even luckier: the precipitation completely stopped and clouds lingered…perfect light for an outdoor ceremony! Heather and Jason were married at the Bowdoinham Gazebo, along the Cathance River. After their ceremony, we spent some time creating portraits nearby, and then headed over to Bowdoin College in Brunswick, to take advantage of some beautiful architecture. Here are some of our favorites from Heather and Jason’s big day! Congratulations Heather and Jason! Thanks for making us part of your day! xo

Rustic Maine Barn Wedding • Alison + Jake • Midcoast Maine Wedding Photographer

Alison Shell,Bremen,Busy Bride Consulting,Damariscotta Wedding,Darrows Barn Wedding,Jake Andrews,Round Top Barn Wedding,Scratch Bakery,Tricky Britches Band,

Alison and Jake and were married on a lovely September afternoon at her family’s lakeside summer home in Midcoast Maine.  There were so many subtle, personalized touches to their day. As Alison and Jake met in high school (we can relate to that!) their families were already friends and the couple shared many mutual, long time pals, who played a large part in their ceremony and throughout the day.

Instead of a traditional bouquet, Alison chose to gather flowers from friends as she made her way the aisle. When Alison met Jake under the Chuppah (which was handwoven by one of Alison’s Aunts!), he tied her flowers together with twine, creating her bouquet.

The ceremony was officiated by Rabbi Sue, who infused the perfect amount of sentiment and humor into the celebration. An uncle recited animated prose, and seven of Alison and Jake’s close friends read interpretations of the Sheva Brachot, or Seven Blessings traditionally recited at a Jewish Wedding Ceremony. After stomping the glass and sealing the ceremony with a perfect kiss, Alison and Jake danced a jig down the aisle to the music of their violinist, Patrick Mangan, which set a perfect tone for the rest of the evening.

Alison and Jake threw a lively reception at Darrow’s Barn (a former dairy barn) at Round Top Farm in Damariscotta.

We wandered the property to take some portraits after the ceremony, before heading to the party. Here are a few of our favorites!

As serious foodies (check out Alison’s awesome blog!) the eats and drinks were important to the newlyweds.  Alison + Jake provided written instructions to their guests to fill mason jars with beer, and repeat! If guest’s didn’t fancy ale, there were also custom cocktails, the ABC (Alison Basil Cucumber) and the Jake-Fashioned. Alison and Jake chose to serve a family style meal of delicious local offerings. The reception was catered by Portsmouth Catering Co. (We loved the sweet food truck they brought along!)

Tricky Britches provided atmospheric bluegrass throughout the cocktail hour, and even played a special rendition of “The wheels on the bus (go round and round)…” for Jake’s little cousin. Singing along was encouraged!  The band moved into the barn where they fueled dancing with feisty bluegrass throughout the evening.

Southern Maine Summer Wedding • Lisa + Michael • Scarborough, Maine Wedding Photography

After a frigid Maine winter, we are pretty darn thrilled that it is finally the start of spring! We’ve been dreaming of daffodils for days now, and it only seems appropriate to blog about a wedding full of smiling people and gorgeous blooms in celebration of the warming days!  Lisa and Michael met through a mutual friend and after their very first blind date, the rest was history!

Lisa and Michael’s day was all about love (obviously!) and uniting family. The couple chose to have the five children they share between them as their wedding party ❤

Coastal Maine Cottage Wedding • Donna + Ginger • West Bath, Maine Wedding Photography

Donna + Ginger hail from Texas and had never visited the great state of Maine before choosing to tie the knot here. Ginger put it perfectly, when she explained how they chose to marry in Maine:

“Although many states in New England have legalized gay marriage, Donna’s cousin lives in Bath, Maine and Donna had always imagined getting married on the water. So, all the pieces just fell into place for us to have a summer wedding, on the water, with family, legally, in Maine.”  Well said, Ginger! Donna + Ginger also expressed their happiness about a “great unintended consequence of having the wedding ‘away’ (ha ha Maine joke), was that our families got to spend lots of time together and really get to know each other during the long weekend. In hindsight we couldn’t have imagined anything better.”

Both brides are golf teachers (and actually met on a green!) who have a passion for adventure, locally made brews + each other of course! The two decided to take an epic road trip en route to their Maine Wedding. As soon as school was out for the summer, they hitched up their sweet teardrop trailer and departed the Lone Star State to embark on their journey.

We loved hearing about their travels (and were lucky to see some photos from their adventures too!) The trio (Donna, Ginger and their beautiful German Shepard, Skylar) stopped to visit family in Arkansas, stayed in a rural area south of Nashville and “stayed three days on a ridge outside of Asheville, NC watching sunsets over Great Smoky Mountain National Park every evening, enjoying the mountains and streams, and tasting some good beers. ” (As veteran road trippers our selves, we were just a little jealous…) They also camped on the edge of DC, stayed in a state park south of Boston where they “took a 13 mile bike tour all through the city, ate some great food, and drank beer at historic locations.”

From Boston, the next stop was West Bath, Maine for their big day!

We couldn’t have been happier for Donna + Ginger on their wedding day (umm, let’s just say we both shed a few tears behind our cameras. . .) Donna + Ginger walked down the aisle together, followed by their sweet Skylar, who was the ring dog. She wore a special locket on her collar, which contained the rings, and the officiant joked how she was better behaved than most ring bearers! (It was totally true!)

Following their amazing day, Donna + Ginger continued on their adventures. On Sunday, they enjoyed an amazing brunch at Mae’s Cafe before embarking on a boat charter with their guests. They also visited Acadia National Park and Prince Edward Island before heading home. Back in Houston, Donna + Ginger hosted a reception at a local brewery for many of their friends who could not travel to Maine. And, we are told, their friends “got a strong sense of the spirit and joy of the event just from looking at your wonderful pictures!”
